Technology Should Never Replace Compassion
Efficiency matters, but people must remain visible
7 min read
A system may process information efficiently. It cannot replace the human responsibility to notice, reassure and care.
Efficiency should create room for care
Good technology should reduce repetitive work and return professionals to the people they serve.
The person gives the system meaning
A system may be efficient for an organisation and still feel dehumanising to the person using it. Speed is not the only measure of quality.
Compassion recognises complexity
Human lives do not always fit menus and standard processes. People sometimes need an exception, interpretation or a patient conversation.
Digital first must not mean human last
Older adults, disabled people and those with limited digital confidence still need accessible human support.
Reflection
Use technology to reduce burdens, but never allow efficiency to make people invisible.
